Meet Our Team
Tiina Garrison, Ph.D., M.S., CSCS, ACSM EP-C, E-RYT
Tiina is a Certified Baptiste Teacher and Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher via Yoga Alliance. She has been teaching Baptiste inspired classes in Louisiana since 2011.
Tiina first started practicing yoga once a week in 2002 to alleviate stress and gain flexibility. Even with minimal practice she noticed an energetic shift that extended beyond the physical benefits and fell in love with the physical and mental challenge, and peace yoga seemed to bring about. Tiina found herself returning to the mat again and again experiencing a greater sense of balance and spirituality in all aspects of life. This is the exact reason she became a yoga teacher. Tiina’s passion is to share yoga with as many people as possible and she truly believes everyone deserves to have yoga in their lives and to experience the amazing benefits of yoga; self-compassion and kindness, empowerment, and all the other numerous improvements in emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing!
Tiina’s teaching philosophy is to teach to everyone while creating space for each student’s individual practice and experience. Her light-hearted approach to teaching combined with a sound knowledge in exercise science makes her an approachable and powerful teacher. Tiina offers lots of modifications so that ALL participants feel comfortable and successful, and her goal is to teach to the energy of the class allowing students to be less focused on “doing”, and rather just start “being” (B. Baptiste).
Tiina is full-time faculty and Graduate Faculty member at the School of Kinesiology at University of Louisiana Lafayette teaching variety courses from Sports and Exercise Psychology to Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Prior to that, she was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Exercise Science, Health, and Human Performance at Northwestern State University (NSU), she teaches a variety of workshops from Functional Anatomy/Kinesiology to personal training, physiology, and mindfulness in addition to teaching yoga and consulting.
Tiina has over 20 years of teaching experience, of which over 15 is at college level (undergraduate and graduate). In addition to teaching; research, curriculum development, and advising in the academic setting have been part of her work for years. She is also an author of several publications and has presented her work at National and International Sports Medicine Meetings. Tiina teaches mainly Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga and strongly connects with the underlying philosophy and adaptability of the Baptiste Methodologyä. It goes hand-in-hand with her personal and professional ideology/philosophy, which is centered on addressing the individual as a whole including physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the person. As a physiologist, she understands how human bodies (and minds!) are all different, acknowledging the importance of mindfulness and adapting the practice to fit each individual.
Last but not the least, Tiina’s most important role in this world is to be a mother to two of the most amazing kiddos in the world! Her goal is to raise her kids to be kind, critically thinking, and compassionate human beings who explore their potential to the fullest while enjoying life in the present moment!
